Ajax have formally announced the arrival of Pisa striker Lorenzo Lucca, the first Italian ever to wear the prestigious Dutch jersey.

Lucca is an Italy Under-21 international who turns 22 next month and has two goals in five caps for the Azzurrini.

His height represents his greatest strength, standing at 2.01m (approximately 6ft6in), earning him comparisons with Luca Toni.

He came up through the Vicenza, Torino and Brescia academies before moving to Palermo and in the summer of 2021 Pisa.

Lucca hit the headlines and attracted lots of attention after scoring six goals in the opening seven games of the Serie B season, but then failed to find the net again that term.

After links with Bologna and Salernitana, Lucca was snapped up by Ajax, on loan with an option to buy for a total of circa €11m.

He confirmed the move earlier today by saying goodbye to Pisa fans with an Instagram post.

  1. @Rosario, a loose technicality, and Tagliafico wasn’t the first using your criteria. there have been many players of Italian descent – mostly from Belgium and Brazil – who have played in Holland. Taglafico may have Italian papers and heritage, but he’s first and foremost Argentinean; born and raised. Whereas Lucca is Italian born and raised, hence the title of this report.

  2. Great spot for him, at least Ajax plays young players. Unlike most Italian clubs, who prefer 30 year olds.
