Juventus have formally announced they are exiting from the European Super League project, leaving only Real Madrid and Barcelona attached, in a goodwill gesture towards UEFA.

This had been in the air since a statement made on June 6, when the Serie A side already confirmed it was entering a period of discussion with Real Madrid and Barcelona to evaluate their exit.

Another press release was provided this evening that confirmed Juve have ‘initiated the procedure to exit’ from the Super League project.

It marks the end of the Andrea Agnelli era, as the former President had been the driving force behind the Super League plans, which were sprung practically out of nowhere on UEFA, FIFA and in many cases the coaches and players of the clubs involved.

The entire project collapsed within 72 hours when all except for Juve, Real Madrid and Barcelona abandoned it and signed a pledge of fealty to UEFA.

Since then, Agnelli has resigned as President of Juventus in the wake of a capital gains scandal that saw the club docked 10 Serie A points and will probably accept a plea bargain with UEFA to be excluded from the Conference League this season due to Financial Fair Play violations.

Agnelli’s departure and the takeover from his cousin John Elkann allows Juventus to move closer to UEFA and put that period behind them, so the Super League exit is seen as a gesture of goodwill towards the European football body.

“Reference is made to our previous communication dated 6 June 2023, pursuant to which Juventus announced the commencement of a period of discussions with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, clubs not having hitherto announced their intention to exit the Super League project, in respect of Juventus’ proposed decision to exit from said project,” read the statement.

“Following such discussions, and given the existing discrepancies on the interpretation of the relevant contractual terms applicable to the Super League Project, Juventus confirms that it has initiated the procedure to exit therefrom, but it also acknowledges that, under the applicable contractual terms, its exit will be completed and effective only if previously authorised by Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and the remaining clubs involved in the Super League Project.”

  1. Playing in the Conference League is THE punishment, the cheaters should be banned from UCL not the Conference League.
