Bentancur moves to Tottenham, source: Spurs Twitter

Juventus have officially announced Rodrigo Bentancur’s move to Tottenham and confirmed the details of the deal.

The 24-year-old Uruguayan midfielder has joined the Lillywhites on a permanent transfer from the Bianconeri, being an important mid-season reinforcement for coach Antonio Conte. Spurs are looking to push for a top four finish this season and the player’s arrival will give the Italian coach an extra weapon in his arsenal.

As announced by Juventus, Bentancur has been sold to Tottenham for €19m, payable over three years, with €6m in objective-linked add-ons attached.

The Uruguayan midfielder was a regular feature in coach Massimiliano Allegri’s midfield in Turin this season, but he never particularly convinced the Italian coach, who will be happy to replace the player with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria.

Bentancur made 181 appearances for Juventus since his arrival in 2017 from Boca Juniors. In that time, he scored three goals, provided 18 assists, winning three Scudetti and two Coppa Italia titles.

Tottenham also released a statement confirming Bentancur’s signing, saying:

“We are delighted to announce the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, subject to international clearance and a work permit.

“The midfielder has signed a contract with us until 2026.

“Born in Nueva Helvecia, Uruguay, Rodrigo came through the ranks at Boca Juniors, making his senior debut for them in 2015 and subsequently winning two Primera División titles and a Copa Argentina during his time at the club.

“He moved to Juventus in 2017 where he continued to achieve success, winning three consecutive Serie A titles between 2018 and 2020, in addition to lifting the Supercoppa Italiana twice and the Coppa Italia twice, in 2017/18 and again last season (2020/21).

“The 24-year-old featured regularly in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League throughout his time with I Bianconeri, playing against us in the latter competition during the 2017/18 season.

“On the international stage, Rodrigo has represented Uruguay since 2017. Part of the young side that won the Under-20 South American Championship in 2017, he made his senior international debut later that year and has subsequently represented his country at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, in addition to the 2019 and 2021 instalments of the Copa America.

“To date, he has 46 senior caps to his name and will join up with us for the first time following Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in Montevideo on Tuesday.”

  1. Who is willing to bet that he’ll get sent off at least twice between now and the end of the season? Walking fouler. At juve, he could rely on the refs to be lenient. Wont get the same treatment in a spurs shirt.

  2. @Rosario I know you are a hater but he is great at pressing and being a ball winner. He will excel in the Premier League as he has the physicality and stamina for it. He will be one of their best players for the rest of the season mark my words. I’m surprised Liverpool didn’t go for him as he suits them perfectly.

  3. @LDN

HAHAHAHA. Stamina to clatter into everyone. In the game vs Milan last weekend, he could’ve easily been sent off twice with a stronger ref in charge. He neither ever knows whether he’s coming or going. Headless chicken comes to mind.

  4. Ldn Rosario is correct. Bentacur running in the pitch like a lost chicken. Hi couldn’t win a ball without a foull. I am happy Juve get rid of him.Good luck to him in Tottenham
