Inter goalkeeper André Onana announces international retirement: ‘My Cameroonian heart will continue to beat.’

The 26-year-old was dropped by his national team for two of their three group-stage games at the World Cup after a technical argument with coach Rigobert Song.

He had played the first match against Switzerland, but was replaced for the second against Serbia and flew home before the third and final game with Brazil.

Onana has now confirmed he will no longer play with his national team through an official statement published on his social media.

“Every story has its end and my story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end,” he said.

“Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team and for our people who have always supported us no matter how difficult the moment was.

“My feeling will never change, my Cameroonian heart will continue to beat and wherever I go, I will always fight to lift the flag of Cameroon as high as possible.”

Onana made his senior debut with Cameroon in September 2016 and played 34 games with his national team.

He joined as a free agent last summer after the end of his contract with Ajax. He has played 13 games across all competitions with the Serie A giants this term, conceding 16 goals and keeping five clean sheets.

  1. Less than 35 caps, and yet he has written an essay as if he’s had a career like Buffon or Casillas 😂

  2. What a weak move which only shows he has a huge ego.
Hypocritical as well declaring his love for the national team and then quitting at 26 for no other reason than feeling insulted 😆
