Chelsea have announced that Gonzalo Higuain has left the club after they opted not to retain the Juventus striker.

A statement on Chelsea’s official website confirmed Higuain, along with four other players, had departed after their contracts expired on Sunday. 

The Argentine arrived from Milan in January, the Blues taking over the Rossoneri’s loan deal, which included a €9m option of another season or a permanent transfer for €36m.

Despite winning the Europa League, however, he scored just five goals in all competitions.

Maurizio Sarri, with whom he worked at Napoli and who brought him to Stamford Bridge, has also moved to Juve.

The 31-year-old has been linked with Romabut his agent-brother is adamant the Bianconeri are the only Italian team he will play for.
