Genoa have officially sacked Coach Fabio Liverani to bring back Gian Piero Gasperini on a three-year contract.

The decision was made after a 2-0 home defeat to Napoli on Saturday made this the club’s worst Serie A start since 1983.

It was reported last night that President Enrico Preziosi had a dinner meeting with Gasperini to work out the details of the contract.

The news was formalised with a statement on the club website, which confirmed this is a three-year deal.

Liverani had been appointed over the summer for his first senior management job, having spent just two years working with the younger members of the Genoa academy.

Although he took them to a 3-0 Derby della Lanterna victory over local rivals Sampdoria, other results were disappointing and they failed to score in their last three games.

This is a return to Marassi for Gasperini, who was already at the helm from 2006 to November 2010.

Since he was sacked by Genoa, Gasp has gone on to very brief spells in charge of Inter (where he was fired after four Serie A rounds) and Palermo (who hired, fired, recalled and split with the Coach in the space of six months).
