Albert Gudmundsson has officially joined Fiorentina on loan with a possible obligation to buy from Genoa, having completed his medical tests with La Viola earlier on Friday afternoon.
The sought-after Iceland international joins La Viola at a reported cost of €8m for the season-long loan. Fiorentina will also pay a further €17m plus €3.5m in bonuses to take the total cost of the deal up to €28.5m if it is made permanent.
Gudmundsson enjoyed a break-through season in Serie A last term, netting 14 league goals from 35 outings. He had also received proposals from the likes of Inter and Premier League outfit Tottenham at earlier stages of the transfer window.
What Fiorentina said about Gudmundsson
“Born in Reykjavik on 15 June 1997, Gudmundsson has previously worn the shirts of AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven, clubs with which he won a Dutch Championship,” the club wrote in a statement.
“Last season, wearing the Genoa colours, he played 37 matches in Serie A and the Coppa Italia, collecting 16 goals and 5 assists.
“Gudmundsson has also played for the Icelandic senior national team on 37 occasions, scoring 10 goals.
“The new Viola footballer will be presented to the press on Tuesday 20 August at 12:30 at the Wind3 Media Center at the Rocco B. Commisso Viola Park.”
Curiously, Fiorentina’s Gudmundsson announcement came just minutes after Genoa announced the signing of his replacement, Andrea Pinamonti.
All of those players are part of a chain-reaction, which will likely end with Fiorentina star Nico Gonzalez joining Juventus in a €30m move.
