Former Spain international Cesc Fabregas has officially been appointed as Como’s head coach after getting his coaching badges: ‘I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position.’

Former midfielder Fabregas has been appointed as Como’s head coach signing a four-year contract with the newly-promoted Serie A side.

The ex-Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal star was appointed by the Azzurri in November 2023, but he had yet to get his UEFA coaching badges then, so he was joined by Osian Roberts a few weeks later.

Under Fabregas and Roberts’ guidance, Como earned promotion to Serie A last term.

Now that Fabregas is officially entitled to take charge of a professional club alone, he has signed a four-year deal.

“Como 1907 delighted to confirm that Cesc Fàbregas will become head coach of the men’s team on a four year contract,” the club said in an official statement.

“The appointment comes after a successful campaign last season as interim and assistant coach culminating in the promotion back to Serie A.”

Despite Fabregas’s appointment, Roberts will remain at the club.

“As planned Osian Roberts will now be fully focused on his role of Head of Development for Como 1907, tasked with creating a Como Culture within the organisation including coach education and player development plans,” the club announced.

“I am so happy to be starting this season as head coach and I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position,” said Fabregas.

“I share the ambitions of the group and believe this is just the start of where this club can go. It’s going to be a tough and important season but myself and the rest of the coaching staff are ready and we all believe.”

Mirwan Suwarso, official representative of the ownership group commented: “It’s an honour for us to officially appoint Cesc as head coach. The impact of his knowledge, experience and passion is already evident in the success of last season and the evolution of our playing style.. We believe that this is just the start though and look forward to continuing working with Cesc this season and for many years to come. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Osh for the brilliant job he did last season as he steps into the role of player and coach development and a key architect for the future success of our club.”

Como will make their 2024-25 Serie A debut at the Allianz Stadium against Thiago Motta’s Juventus on August 19.

Motta and Fabregas crossed paths during the 2012 Euros, when Italy and Spain met twice during the competition, first during the group stage and then in the Final, which La Roja won 4-0.
