Empoli have officially confirmed the signing of Leeds United defender Giuseppe Bellusci on loan with option to buy.

The centre-back joined the Elland Road side in 2014 after Catania’s relegation, but it was reported today that he will return to Serie A with the Tuscan side.

“Empoli FC announces the signing of Giuseppe Bellusci from Leeds United Football Club on loan with the right of redemption,” a statement on Empoli’s website confirmed.

The 26-year-old arrives as a replacement for Lorenzo Tonelli, who joined Napoli at the end of the season.

Leeds United also confirmed the move, citing family reasons for the defender’s return to Italy.

“United defender Giuseppe Bellusci has joined Serie A side Empoli on a season-long loan.

The Italian centre-back, who featured 31 times in all competitions during the last campaign, returns to his homeland due to family reasons, with a view to a permanent move due.

“Bellusci, a summer 2014 signing from Catania, has 61 United appearances to his name in total.

“The Club would like to wish Giuseppe the very best of luck during his time in Italy.”
