It is now official that Domenico Criscito has returned to Genoa for a fifth different spell at the club he always loved, following a very brief experience at Toronto FC.

The defender has formally signed a new contract starting January 2, 2023 and was a free agent after walking away from the Canadian club in MLS.

It is the ideal way to celebrate his 36th birthday, which will be on December 30.

Although he was born near Naples, Criscito spent most of his career at Genoa, joining their youth academy in 2002.

He was in a co-ownership deal with Juventus for some time, which saw him leave and return, before the transfer to Zenit St Petersburg in 2011.

Criscito then returned to Genoa as a free agent in 2018 and left again for Toronto FC in July 2022, but didn’t even last six months.

Among the main reasons for his most recent departure from Marassi was coach Alexander Blessin, so his sacking paved the way for a fifth different experience with this club.

The new coach is former Genoa striker Alberto Gilardino.

He has played 274 competitive games for Genoa, scoring 30 goals and providing 13 assists.
