Cremonese have officially sacked coach Massimiliano Alvini after a historically poor start to the Serie A season.

The decision seemed inevitable after today’s 3-2 home defeat to fellow newly-promoted side Monza, managing only seven draws and 11 defeats.

This was Alvini’s debut top flight campaign, as he was at Perugia last term, and drafted in because Fabio Pecchia wanted a new challenge after securing their surprise promotion from Serie B.

The club stuck with Alvini longer than perhaps was expected, considering Cremonese failed to manage a single Serie A victory in the first half of the season.

Even more remarkably, they were not leading for a single minute of Serie A football either, something not achieved since Ancona in 2003-04.

It is widely reported that Cremonese have approached Davide Ballardini for negotiations, but the former Genoa coach has not yet agreed terms.

Other alternatives for the role include ex-Sampdoria and Parma boss Roberto D’Aversa.
