Mattia Caldara is expected to be out of action for “five to six months” after Milan confirmed surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
“The Club announces that Mattia Caldara has picked up an injury following a collision in training yesterday. The defender underwent keyhole surgery today to repair the damage to his anterior crucial ligament,” read a statement.
“The operation was carried out by Professor Pier Paolo Mariani, with Rossoneri club doctor Mario Brozzi in attendance, and was a complete success. Recovery time is estimated to be between five to six months.”
The extremely unlucky centre-back has been beset by injuries in his career between Atalanta, Juventus and Milan.
He only made two appearances for the Rossoneri this season in the Europa League and Coppa Italia due to an Achilles tendon issue.
That kept him on the touchline from October to February, while he also struggled with muscular problems.
Caldara will mark his 25th birthday on Sunday and has two senior Italy caps to his name.
