Cagliari have announced the signing of former Atalanta defender Jose Luis Palomino, agreeing a one-year contract with option to extend for another season.

The centre-back turned 34 in January and was a free agent after his contract with La Dea was allowed to run down.

The Argentine had been one of the old guard in Bergamo, joining the club from Ludogorets back in the summer of 2017.

He went on to make 225 competitive appearances for the team, scoring nine goals and contributing five assists.

His relationship with coach Gian Piero Gasperini broke down last year and he spent most of it in the stands, even after being cleared of doping violations.

Palomino has now signed a one-year deal with Cagliari, with option to extend until June 2026.

Cagliari get Palomino, risk losing Gaetano

However, the Sardinians have seen their negotiations with Napoli for midfielder Gianluca Gaetano reach the point of breaking down and that move could now be abandoned.

He had already seemed to be very close to Parma before similar problems arose, as the clubs consider Napoli’s asking price to be unrealistic.
