Diego Godin has officially terminated his contract with Cagliari by mutual consent and is now set to join Atletico Mineiro.

The Uruguay international had been excluded from the squad after being named as one of the players no longer wanted at the club in December.

As expected, Cagliari have now announced he has terminated his contract by mutual consent after 12 appearances between Serie A and the Coppa Italia in the current campaign.

The defender turns 36 next month and will make his next step in Brazil with Atletico Mineiro.

His contract was due to run until June 2023, having joined Cagliari as a free agent in September 2020, managing 40 competitive appearances for the club.

Before that, he left Atletico Madrid for free in July 2019 for a season-long experience at Inter.

This is a return to South America for Godin, who had been in Europe since quitting Nacional de Montevideo for Villarreal in 2007, then spending nine years with Atletico Madrid.
