Cagliari have confirmed the appointment of Walter Mazzarri as their new head coach.

The former Torino and Watford tactician has signed a three-year contract with the Sardinians.

Cagliari have had a tough start to the season, collecting one point in the opening three games. On Sunday, they threw away a two-goal lead suffering a 3-2 home defeat against Genoa.

Leonardo Semplici was therefore sacked despite leading the club to Serie A survival last term, managing 21 points in 15 matches.

Torino sacked Mazzarri in February 2020 and this is his first appointment since.

The Italian tactician, who has also been in charge of Napoli, Sampdoria and Reggina during his coaching career, averaged 1,55 points per game during his 89 games at Torino.

  1. Another high level coach taking a job below what he should be aspiring to. Just like di Francesco, he has paid for moving from jobs at napoli and inter to suddenly taking jobs at relegation fighting teams. At cagliari, he will have to perform miracLes for his stock to go up again.

  2. What a joke. A ‘three-year’ contract. Mazzarri has a smart agent. Lucky if he lasts three months. But they’ll still have to pay him for at least two years.
