Former Fiorentina and Inter midfielder Borja Valero has announced his retirement from football: ‘I wanted to do it under a crowded Curva Fiesole.’

The 36-year-old played the last season at Fiorentina collecting 21 appearances across all competitions.

The Spaniard, who arrived in Italy in 2012 when he joined La Viola from Villareal, has decided to hang his boots after 518 games as a professional footballer, 268 of which in Serie A.

He spent five seasons at the Artemio Franchi and three at Inter and announced ending his career with an Instagram post.

“The moment that has always appeared so far away has come. It’s time for me to stop playing football.

“I would have preferred doing it under a crowded Curva Fiesole, but unfortunately, in life and football, not everything depends on us.

“I thank all the clubs where I was honoured to play. I thank my coaches and teammates, I would have never made it without you. I thank my wife and my children, Alvaro and Lucia, I love you madly.

“And thank you, florentines, you’ve been my biggest victory. See you in town.”
