“Born on July 11, 2002 in San Giovanni Bianco, Lombardy, Ruggeri joined Atalanta’s youth academy at the age of nine and made his first-team debut as an 18-year-old on Nov. 3, 2020 in a Champions League match against Liverpool.
“A left-back with good crossing ability and great stamina, he spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Salernitana. He returned to Atalanta the following campaign and established himself as an important part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s team.
Ruggeri’s stats at Atalanta

“After making 15 appearances throughout the 2022/23 season, he made his breakthrough the following year, playing 48 matches across all competitions. In the 2023/24 campaign, he was selected for the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season, which he won alongside Juan Musso, who will once again be his teammate at Atleti.
“An international at all youth levels for Italy, he was called up to the senior Azzurri squad in March 2025 for the Nations League quarter-final game against Germany.

“Welcome, Matteo!”
Italian sources claim that Atletico Madrid paid circa €20m to secure the services of the left wing-back.
A product of the Atalanta academy, the 22-year-old played 99 Serie A games with La Dea, providing nine assists. He also added nine Champions League appearances with the Nerazzurri.

At this rate there’ll hardly be any Italians playing in Italy.
At least he will get playing time and experience…unlike the disgraceful Seria A.
