The two clubs had recently reached agreement for an exchange of loans for 18 months involving the Spaniard and Alessio Cerci.

With the Italy international expected in Milan today ahead of undergoing medical tests tomorrow, Atleti have now confirmed the return of Torres to the Vicente Calderon.

“Fernando Torres returns to Atletico Madrid after an agreement reached by our club with Milan, establishing that the international striker will play on loan for the remainder of this season and one more campaign,” Atleti’s statement released on their website reads today.

“Signing with our club is subject to the relevant medical examination that the player must perform to join the team.

“The move will be definitively closed on January 5, the day the winter market opens in Italy.”

Torres also took to Twitter to post his delight on the deal’s announcement, writing: “At last back home. Thanks to all that have made this dream come true. Forza @Atleti”

The Rossoneri had bought the player outright from Chelsea over the weekend, so as to allow for his temporary return to the club he first left seven-and-a-half years ago to join Liverpool.

There are reports that Atletico Madrid hold a clause in the agreement with Milan, to interrupt Cerci’s loan at San Siro this summer for a sale.
