Cristian Romero has completed his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, with Atalanta practically tripling their investment to earn €55m plus €5m in bonuses.
It was announced with a video showing his former Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini picking ‘Cuti’ up at the airport.
The Argentina international only joined Atalanta last year on a two-season loan from Juventus with option to buy for a total €18m.
They exercised that option this afternoon, the final step before Romero could be sold to Spurs for circa €50m plus another €5m in performance-related bonuses.
Curiously, that deal, the one that took Romero to Juventus from Genoa in 2019 for €26m and the talks bringing him to Tottenham were all negotiated by the same man, director Fabio Paratici.
He was at Juventus until this summer, when at the end of his contract, he joined Spurs.
Juventus ultimately made a loss of €4.7m on the deals involving ‘Cuti’ Romero.
Atalanta have already replaced Romero with Merih Demiral, who was also picked up from Juventus on loan with option to buy.
That deal is believed to be worth €2.5m for the one-season loan, with option at €25m plus bonuses and a cut of any future transfer fee.
