Aston Villa have announced the permanent signing of Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen following his year on loan from Roma.
The 32-year-old Sweden shot stopper joined Steven Gerrard’s side in the January transfer window following a six-month spell with Sheffield United.
He only made one appearance for the club, appearing in their 3-2 loss to Manchester City on the final weekend of the season.
As announced by Aston Villa, the English side have decided to permanently sign Olsen from Roma in a deal worth around €3.5m, giving Gerrard a relatively reliable backup option.
It’s almost impossible to imagine him displacing Copa America winner Emiliano Martínez in the starting lineup, so he’ll instead be the club’s second choice shot stopper.
Roma signed Olsen in the summer of 2018 from FC Copenhagen in a deal worth around €9 million, but he failed to settle well in Serie A, being sent away to Cagliari on loan only a year later.
He ultimately made 35 appearances for the Giallorossi, conceding 58 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.
Aston Villa is pleased to announce the signing of Robin Olsen for an undisclosed fee! ✅
