Roma have officially announced the signing of midfielder Houssem Aouar on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract with Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais.

The 24-year-old has agreed to a five year deal, which will tie him to the Stadio Olimpico until the summer of 2028.

Aouar has been on the books of Lyon since the age of 11, joining the team’s academy in 2009, before progressing through the youth ranks, turning out for Lyon B and eventually making his first team debut in the Europa League Round of 32 in 2016.

Since then, Aouar has racked up 179 appearances in Ligue 1, chipping in with 30 goals and 24 assists along the way, as well as a further five goals from 34 games across the Europa League and Champions League.

Heading into the 2023-24 season, Auoar will turn out wearing the no. 22 shirt for the Giallorossi.

For several years, Roma have taken advantage of the publicity from signing announcements to raise awareness for missing children around the world.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Roma, because they’re a great club with a great history,” Aouar told the club’s website upon his signing.

“I think it’s the right project for me, with a big team, quality players and a unique fanbase. I’m now a Giallorossi player and I’m ready to go.”

Speaking of Aoaur’s arrival on Sunday afternoon, director Tiago Pinto added: “Aouar is a young player who’s already made more than 250 professional appearances. He has technical quality and the prerequisites to keep getting better.

“His desire to come to Roma, despite having attracted interest from several top clubs, is a source of satisfaction for us all.”
