Inter veteran Francesco Acerbi has undergone an operation at the Humanitas Clinical Institute today after recently withdrawing from the Italy squad.

The 36-year-old Italian centre back officially stepped away from Luciano Spalletti’s Azzurri squad in Coverciano last week following his call-up to the provisional squad, withdrawing due to a frustrating hernia injury that plagued him in the closing stages of the season.

Acerbi was expected to feature for Italy at the upcoming European Championship and his withdrawal has reduced Spalletti’s options, as has the cruciate ligament injury suffered by Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini on Sunday evening.

Acerbi operation

As announced by Inter, Acerbi successfully underwent an operation on his right inguinal wall – the wall between the abdomen and the groin – at the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Rozzano today. After a period of rest, he’ll begin his recovery ahead of the 2024-25 season.

The 36-year-old defender has a year left on his contract with the Nerazzurri and is set to remain a part of Simone Inzaghi’s squad for the new campaign.
