Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa explains why he came to Salernitana and the possibility of playing for another Serie A club. ‘I hope to one day play in the Champions League.’
The shot-stopper went straight from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to battling against relegation with Salernitana, though is now in competition with Luigi Sepe for the gloves.
“I grew up watching Serie A and did not hesitate. I didn’t want to just stop after Qatar or go on vacation,” Ochoa told Marca newspaper in Spain.
“I will be in Salerno for six months and then we’ll see if it’s for another year or not. We’ll see what happens after these six months. I could already be a free agent in the summer.”
Ochoa reportedly signed a six-month contract with an option to extend by another year if Salernitana manage to avoid relegation to Serie B.
However, there have already been reports that Ochoa has been approached by Milan and Inter with the possibility of becoming their second-choice goalkeeper for next season.
“I did receive approaches from other important clubs in Italy, they already know that I have an EU passport, which makes everything easier. I hope to one day play in the Champions League.”
Ochoa will be 38 in July and has a record 135 senior caps for Mexico, participating in five World Cup tournaments.
His previous clubs were Club America, Ajaccio, Malaga, Granada and Standard Liege.
