Sassuolo midfielder Pedro Obiang has sent a message thanking everyone for their support and assuring he is ‘in good spirits’ in hospital after a bronchopulmonary outbreak.

The situation is so serious that a club statement yesterday noted he would not be allowed to train or play football for the foreseeable future.

“Thank you for all the love received, it has not been an easy period, but I maintain the same belief as when I was a child,” wrote Obiang on Instagram.

“At the moment I am well and looked after by all of the professionals in the Modena hospital, where they have kept me in good spirits.

“I want to thank the club for the patience, seriousness and respect they have shown me during this difficult time.

“And also to the fans, you make this profession so much more than a sport, and I will return all that love on the pitch!

“Gracias, Pedro.”

The 29-year-old was born and raised in Spain, but plays his international football for Equatorial Guinea, where he has three goals in 11 caps.

His previous clubs before joining Sassuolo in 2019 were West Ham United, Sampdoria and Atletico Madrid.

The cause of the bronchopulmonary outbreak is viral, according to the Neroverdi statement, but it’s not clear how it developed or how long it will take for Obiang to fully recover.
