Pedro Obiang admits his Sassuolo teammates are “much stronger than I expected and I’ve seen the quality at our disposal.”

The midfielder made the move from West Ham United for €8m, a return to Italy after his experience at Sampdoria, which concluded in 2015.

“The team is much stronger than I expected, as being on the inside I’ve seen the quality at our disposal. We’re also all pretty young, so I settled in well,” Obiang said in his Press conference.

“I was a little behind in terms of tactical lessons, as the other players had been here for longer and already knew the system, whereas I needed to catch up.

“Now we begin the season against Torino, we are preparing and will certainly be ready. If we have the right mentality, then we can get the points.”

The 27-year-old was asked which role he will take on under Coach Roberto De Zerbi.

“The Coach called me, said what my role could be and now we’ll see where he wants to use me. I’ve been fortunate enough to play in every midfield role during my career, so he knows the team far better than I do and I’m sure he’ll make the right choice for everyone.

“I was a very different guy at Sampdoria, the football we played there was different. De Zerbi and the players here have a different approach and are much more attacking.

“They told me about the project, but to be honest, I did not expect us to already be at such an advanced stage, as my teammates really are very impressive.”
