SportMediaset confirms Roberto Mancini will likely resign next week and Fabio Cannavaro is not the only candidate to replace him as Andrea Pirlo, Stefano Pioli and Claudio Ranieri are being considered by the FIGC.

Mancini’s contract expires in 2026, but the coach will likely resign next week after the third-place play-off against Turkey. SportMediaset confirms Mancini is strongly considering leaving the national team.

This morning, an early report from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggested that Cannavaro was the leading candidate to replace Mancini, mentioning a plan to appoint the former defender and Marcello Lippi as the Azzurri’s technical director.

However, according to SportMediaset, there are more candidates that the FIGC is currently considering. Among them, Pirlo, Pioli and Ranieri. According to journalist Simone Malagutti, Ranieri and Pioli have already been contacted by the FIGC. Pioli has recently extended his contract with Milan until 2023, while Ranieri was sacked after 14 games in charge of Watford, who had called him to replace Xisco.

  1. No, man.

I know that experience counts for something but I don’t want a CT over 60 Years Old. Even though Ranieri is a gentleman.

    I’d say Cannavaro or Pirlo

  2. For the record, he’s 70 Years Old.

CT’s used to be old and the National Team job was the culmination of a lifetime of Managing.

It’s changed now. Most NT Managers are under 55 YO.

Again, all due respect to Mr Ranieri but this is not a good fit.

  3. Ranieri would be the perfect fit, experienced, humble and above all a tinker an, the Azzurri need someone to constantly shake the team up, and bring new faces, not constantly use dead wood.

  4. And what the heck is there a game for third place????? Third place to what? FIFA just loves meaningless games. Do you think either Turkish or Italian players want to play in this game or care for it?

  5. ‘next week after the third-place play-off against Turkey’ What!!?? What is that all about. Ridiculous.

And Ranieri is not the man for the job – with all due respect.

  6. Cannavaro & Lippi are you kidding me? This has 2010 written all over it.

Time to bring in a fresh approach. I would be good with either Pirlo, Pioli or even Gasperini

  7. Honestly, who will want this terrible national team? Two world cups missed, and a huge luck to win a devaluated Euro. Who is really talented in this team? It is full of non-fulfilled promises!

in this scenario, Ranieri would be a great idea. Pirlo and Cannavaro have little to zero exprience to take the team. Gasperini would be a good idea too

  8. They are going nowhere regardless they have just cemented themselves as a tier 2 football nation now . I don’t care what their history says this team is now just above the minnows. This would never happen to Brazil Germany or Argentina . The only manager capable of changes this would be conte but he just leaves and moves on to another club

  9. I don’t like a young coach in charge of a NT. It almost never works. Young coaches have a lot of enthusiasm, they need to work everyday on the pitch, so club level coaching is best for them. Taking charge of a national team requires a lot of experience.

  10. Ranieri? 😂😂😂 Italy will never learn. With Cheillini retiring and Bonucci basically average when Cheillini is not next to him I see tough times for that Italian back line. Dunnuromma needs to get better it’s always something with him, hope he didn’t peak at euro 21.

  11. None of these candidate would be better than Mancini imo. Pioli has never coached outside Serie A and we all know that Serie A is not considered one of the top leagues. Cannavaro and Pirlo same issue and they need to get more experience. I’m tired of seeing these ridiculous suggestions to have ex-players with no coaching experience mentioned for NT. Please stop suggesting dumb things like what Juve did with Pirlo. They need more experience. Ranieri, no offense but 70 is too old for me. I don’t see how a grandpa is going to give the right motivations or have a sharp enough mind to manage a team. Stick with Mancini unless Capello wants to give it a run. Its not his fault Serie A is lacking in the offensive scoring department. The only thing he can be blamed for is not shaking up the team and using other players. But most of you would have made the same mistake with no time to prepare and thinking we are only playing against Macedonia

  12. I don’t understand why you need a dedicated coach, there just isn’t enough to do the entire year. The coach should be a club coach/ national coach or coaches who are part time just like the players. This is what we do in Canada for our hockey national team. You could have a panel to select the team instead of 1 stubborn man.

  13. I agree with many of the threads that we need experience, and there is non better than Ancelotti in cup competitions.

They need to go all out to get him back from Madrid.

  14. Gman,

You write Ranieri is too old at age 70 (which I agree with) but then suggest the 75 YO Fabio Capello?

  15. RE: Ancelotti

After November 2017, Albertini tried his hardest to get Carletto but he said he didn’t want to leave the Club game. He said he would take it one day but the time wasn’t now. With him doing well at Madrid, he won’t take it now. No way.

Within 2 Months or so a decision has to be made as the Nations League starts up again and there are 4 matches in June, iirc. Plus the useless Finalissma versus Argentina.

  16. I don’t mind Canna. But not with Lippi behind the scenes.

This would be like recent ManUtd with Carrick as caretaker and Fergie behind the scenes.

    This is a disaster.

  17. No ideal candidates (there very rarely is), but Gasperini or Pioli would bring fresher air and ideas probably. and they have experience in European competitions now too albeit at club level.

Ancelotti? A lot more international experience of course but none at national level either and normally needs big star players and huge resources to achieve some success – and even then failed at PSG and Chelski.

  18. To be honest, I don’t think a change of coach would achieve anything.

It’s too easy to blame Mancini. If anything, that group of player probably never would have gotten a trophy with an other coach.

This a a huge failure of the entire italian football system. I mean, look at what the Serie A teams are doing in the european leagues…

Unless there is a systemic revolution of an even bigger extent, Italy is doomed to keep playing in the underdogs league for a very long time.

  19. @Partenopebloke, Gasperini’s system takes a while to implement and thus is more suited to club football where the players can train with it every day.

@Ruicosta_10, uh, Ancelotti has a record no one else has (champion of all top 5 European leagues), and has won everything as a player himself at club level. He was part of every national squad between 1981 and 1991 and only injuries at almost every tournament prevented him from being a protagonist. I think he would be totally suitable, but I don’t think he’d take the job.

My pick would be Gattuso, as this group of players needs grinta right now more than anything. Psychologically recovering from this is going to be a task in and of itself. Then I would say Luciano Spalletti, but he probably wouldn’t take the job. Pioli is fine if it means De Zerbi goes to Milan😉

  20. Gasparini is the ideal candidate. He’s a coach who knows how to give an identity to his team. Atalanta play will balls. They’re balanced and create a lot of opportunities and seem very efficient. Player selection was the biggest Mistake Mancini made and we paid for it. You don’t leave out Balotelli, Zaniolo, Zaccagni, Sensi and Frattesi.

  21. Please not Ranieri. A fantastic man no doubt, and was a great coach 10+ years ago, but he is 100% not the man to take us where we need to be and where we belong. Apart from Pioli (who won’t take the job), none of the above inspire any sort of confidence going forwards

  22. Leave Mancini be!
We don’t need ex-players who have thus far failed at coaching. Give them time not a national team in pieces!!!!

  23. It’s not like you pick whom ever. As things stand I find it extremely unlikely that Pioli would give up what he built with Milan. The man brought them up from the dead, with a team, based around players under 24. Pioli is going nowhere

  24. Italy needs a young coach with new ideas. Cannovaro or Pirlo should be the ideal coach….
What sucks is that Italy do not have a attacking players or any good defense players.
Bastoni is the most promising player in defense for Italy.
I am not Italian but I am huge fan of this disappointing Italy team
