Not just Messi: which players see their contracts expire at midnight?

by | Jun 30, 2021 12:17

Many players will see their contracts expire at midnight and Giorgio Chiellini, Elseid Hysaj and Franck Ribery are among the most notable in Serie A.

With Lionel Messi’s contract running out at midnight today, Football Italia takes a look at who else, on paper, could be without a club from tomorrow.

Messi’s contract expires, but according to several reports he’s already reached an agreement to extend his stay at the Nou Camp.

The same goes for Giorgio Chiellini who is expected to pen a one-year contract extension with Juventus in the coming days.

In their cases, the end of the contract doesn’t mean ending the relationship with their current clubs, which will continue beyond 2021.

The same is not true of Franck Ribery, who is set to leave Fiorentina after two seasons at the Artemio Franchi, Elseid Hysaj and Nikola Maksimovic, who are set to leave Napoli.

The Albania international is in talks with Lazio and is expected to join his former coach Maurizio Sarri in the Capital.

On paper, even Gigio Donnarumma’s contract with Milan expires at midnight, but that makes little difference for the Italy goalkeeper who has already signed a new contract with PSG.

The likes of Sergio Ramos, Stevan Jovetic and Jerome Boateng are also looking for an agreement with a new club and will give their farewell to Real Madrid, Monaco and Bayern Munich at midnight.

These, according to Transfermarkt, are the most valuable players who see their contracts expire at midnight.
