Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will be at the whistle when Northern Ireland host Italy in the crucial World Cup Qualifier on Monday night.

After the 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the Stadio Olimpico, the Azzurri are playing for the top spot in Group C in Belfast.

Italy and Switzerland are tied at 15 points but the Azzurri lead by two goals and must protect their goal difference in the match against Northern Ireland, when Switzerland host Bulgaria in the last match.

Kovacs has been given the task to oversee the match at Windsor Park and will be helped by German referee Bastian Dankert in the VAR room.

The 37-year-old Romanian has overseen three games in the World Cup Qualifiers so far, handing out two red cards and one penalty. He has overseen games in the last two international breaks, at the whistle when Slovenia and Slovakia clashed in September and when Norway beat Montenegro in October.
