Vicente del Bosque has defended his decision to call up a debatably fit Diego Costa ahead of Fernando Llorente.

The Chelsea striker has been ‘barely training’ between matches for his new club, according to Jose Mourinho recently, but has been included in La Roja’s squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers this October.

The call-up was the focus of attention in today’s Press conference for Spain’s Coach, whilst he was also asked why Juventus’ Llorente was not called up instead.

“If we have called Diego Costa it is because we think that he is fine,” Del Bosque has told reporters today.

“If we saw he was not in condition, we would not force him, as has always been the case with all the players.

“We always keep in mind the physical condition of the players. We do not force anyone, we have never forced anyone to play. They always play with the approval of the doctors.

“I cannot get into a focus on Llorente or anyone else. It is a matter of confidence, we are calling up those who we believe are the best.

“No-one is marginalised, everyone can be in contention to be called.”
