Fiorentina will not consider selling Riccardo Montolivo in January despite him being in the last year of his contract.

The Italian international is only tied to the club until June 2012 and the Viola’s attempts to get him to sign a new deal have failed.

It was thus being claimed that Montolivo would be sold for a nominal fee after Christmas, but it now seems as if he’ll only move in the summer on a Bosman free.

“I don’t think that Montolivo will go in January,” Fiorentina President Mario Cognini told Rai Tre on Friday.

“That’s because it is Fiorentina’s aim to actually reach some important objectives at the end of the campaign.”

The former Atalanta playmaker has been strongly paired with a switch to Italian giants Milan.

It’s understood that Montolivo actually turned down the chance to join Roma during the summer.
