Genoa have pulled out of their attempt to sign Federico Marchetti from Cagliari, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Genoa had agreed to pay €5m for the 27-year-old Italy international who stood in for Gigi Buffon at the World Cup.

Marchetti's nightmare at Cagliari finally looked to be over. He hasn't played at all this season after Massimo Cellino took issue with comments he made in an interview with La Gazzetta during the summer.

However, it appears as though Marchetti won't be joining Genoa after Enrico Preziosi grew frustrated with his wage demands.

La Gazzetta understands Marchetti would like €1.5m a year, but his agent's tactics has put off Preziosi.

"I don't buy players from agents, only from clubs," he said.

Marchetti is now being linked with a move to relegation battlers Brescia.
