“Who from the current team would get a game for my Milan?” Albertini considered, speaking to ANSA.

“Everything must be proved, but objectively there aren’t many. It’s hard to think of taking one of my teammates and replacing them with someone from today’s Milan.”

Albertini then reflected on his time at San Siro, and in particular maverick Coach Arrigo Sacchi.

“Sacchi took me from the Primavera and gave me my debut in the first team, then we had many years together in the national team.

“I was a rookie at the time, so I didn’t know if it was normal or not, but it was hard as Hell.

“Off the pitch he demanded the utmost professionalism. ‘Either be a player or a playboy’ he’d say, or similar phrases.

“In my opinion you always need a certain balance. Sacchi was manic, and while that can be a virtue it can also be a limitation.

“Nevertheless, he took us to things which were considered impossible.

“He changed the mentality of Italian football, and for me the best thing he taught me was to be professional, to be manic even now.”
