The Bianconeri are looking for a central midfielder, and it was claimed this morning that they’d made overtures for the Dutch international.
“I haven’t had any kind of contact with Juventus,” Monchi told reporters at Gregoire Defrel’s presentation.
“We’re solely focused on building the team. We’re focused on completing the squad with a winger and I don’t think there’s anything more to be said.
“The winger? My idea is to close this discussion as soon as possible, and I think the squad has enough to tackle the first game.
“My job is to put the squad together as soon as possible, and it’s true there’s a gap there.”
Monchi also praised Defrel, who arrived from Sassuolo on a €5m loan with €15m obligation to buy.
“I’m very happy, satisfied and grateful for Defrel’s willingness to come to Roma. There were a lot of English clubs after him, but he only focused on coming to Roma.
“We all hope that his performances live up to what we expect of him.
“Was Coach Eusebio Di Francesco crucial to his signing? I always had a way of working at Sevilla and here it’s the same.
“I don’t submit to persuasion on the part of the Coach, you choose a profile together and then the sporting director works on it.
“Defrel reflects a profile who can play as a central striker and also on the flank. Di Francesco likes him, and I’ve liked him since my time at Sevilla.”
