“We started this journey two years ago, went through many problems and I called up at least 70 different players who participated to earn this qualification,” Nicolato told RAI Sport.
“We faced up to a thousand problems with on average 10 players pulling out every break for international duty, so I can only thank those who worked with me.”
The team is also changing constantly because the most talented players are plucked by Roberto Mancini for the senior Italy squad.
Nicolato was asked if he will have some of them back for the European Under-21 Championship.
“It’s tough for me to plan for the future right now, I can only work with the players at my disposal. The important thing is that the team spirit remained the same throughout and the work did not change.
“We started this journey with a squad that has the potential to win the Euros.”
