Nicola: ‘Toe to toe with Atalanta’

Davide Nicola lost his unbeaten record on the Udinese bench in a 3-1 defeat to Atalanta, but insists they went “toe-to-toe with them until the 79th minute.”

Nicola has held the reins of the Zebrette for less than a month now, having taken over from Julio Velazquez on November 13, and had picked up four points from his first two games, not conceding a goal.

However, with this result, he is struggling to keep his team away from the relegation zone.

“I really don't care about the problems related to the team's training before I got here,” Nicola told Radio Rai. “I've got my own ideas and that's what we are working on.

“We were toe-to-toe with Atalanta all the way until the 79th minute, and aside from hitting the post, we created other opportunities that could’ve changed the game.

“We knew that we were coming up against a team that is physically very strong, not to mention well-organised, but I saw improvements in many aspects of our game tonight, especially by comparison with our last few matches.”
