This was going to be a head-to-head for safety, but Benevento’s draw with 10-man Crotone and the Toro point against Lazio in Tuesday’s rescheduled tie automatically sent Le Streghe down.

“It’s still the most important match,” insisted Nicola in his press conference. “Once we achieve one target, we have to set another. We want to finish as high up the table as possible and play with enthusiasm, play like Toro.”

The spirit of the Granata is very important to Nicola, who is reportedly not going to be offered a new contract.

“In these four months, not a day went by in which we weren’t fighting for the result. There’s hard work behind this, I am proud and satisfied that I did what was asked of me.

“I never have regrets, as you must learn from mistakes and not want to wipe them out. I feel that this experience proved my methods can be applied to various teams and contexts, which makes me think I’m on the right track. I want to improve in every area.

“Not everyone can do this job, you need a certain detachment from everything that goes around you. It doesn’t annoy me that other coaches are linked with Torino, as I know it’s a role many coaches want. What matters to me is that I proved I am worthy of Toro.

“I would be happy to continue here and I’ll tell the club what I think.”
