Genoa coach Davide Nicola stressed that the Rossoblu’s salvation hopes ‘depend on the six games remaining’ in Serie A, starting with their trip to Torino.

Nicola took over at the Marassi during Christmas when the club were dead last in Serie A after a 4-0 defeat to Inter.

The former Crotone and Udinese coach arrived in the port city on a six-month deal with an option to extend and the third manager of the season at the Marassi has lifted the Rossoblu to 17th in Serie A, one point above the relegation zone.

The former Crotone and Udinese coach arrived in the port city on a six-month deal with an option to extend and the third manager of the season at the Marassi has lifted the Rossoblu to 17th in Serie A, one point above the relegation zone.

The 46-year-old returned to Genoa after having played there for six seasons from 1995-98 and against from 1999-2002, but has pointed out that he ‘never calculated’ how many points he would need to pick up to save the club from being relegated to Serie B.

“I didn’t do any calculations when we were last and 11 points behind, let alone now,” Nicola told the club's website. “I’ll leave the statistics to those who have more competence.

“I think I’m giving my best and everything I have. Six games from the end, salvation depend on the six challenges remaining.”
