Davide Nicola explained why January signings Adama Soumaoro and Andrea Masiello have made the difference at Genoa after a 3-0 win away to Bologna.

“The great thing about this season is that nobody can run away from anyone, it’s all very unpredictable and balanced,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“We are glad to be getting consistent results, but the fact remains we are still third from bottom. We have to get out of this situation.”
Nicola is the third tactician on the Genoa bench after Davide Ballardini and Thiago Motta.
“I’ve been here for two months, we tried to focus on some priorities and build confidence on the positive elements. There’s a long way to go, but results help give us the belief to work with greater focus.
“The first goal came from a dead ball situation, which is also progress we can be pleased with. We have to improve some of our movements, as they are still a little clumsy.”
The January transfer window also had a huge effect on the squad, as today Soumaoro scored on an assist from fellow new signing Masiello.
“We wanted to increase the competition for places within the group,” continued Nicola.
“Soumaoro settled in straight away and it’s no surprise, as he was the captain of Lille. Everyone already knew Masiello for all he achieved with Atalanta, he has made us more aggressive and can spark counter-attacks.
“Our idea is to defend as little as possible, we need to get the ball back quickly and attack.”
