The Rossoblu emerged victorious against Cagliari thanks to a Goran Pandev strike.

“I wouldn’t give me too much credit, even if the presence of the coach counts,” said Nicola in his post-game press conference.

“It’s true to recognise that when a team starts thinking the same way you can achieve results.

“Today we started with the intention of controlling the game and advancing through the centre.

“We didn’t do it the way I like however. The tactical makeup of Cagliari is different, they are very skilled in quick exchanges.”

Paolo Ghiglione had to leave the pitch due to injury, and Nicola says they experimented with some new ideas.

“Ghiglione’s injury allowed us to try some new things, but the lads are conditioned by the 3-5-2 system, and it didn’t really work.

“However this doesn’t mean that this team doesn’t have the means of adapting to new ideas. It’s right to work on new ideas, not just with a three-man defence.”

Nicola felt Genoa could’ve killed the game off in the second period.

“In the second half we could’ve seen the game off, but instead we allowed Cagliari to stay involved, and they could’ve equalised.”

New signing Adama Soumaoro made his full debut for the side, and put in an impressive performance.

“He was an intuition of the President. I saw the videos, we watched him with great attention.

“He was the captain of Lille, not a stranger. What interested me was that he was ready to play in Serie A.”

Goran Pandev scored the winning goal, and Nicola was full of praise for the Macedonian.

“His career is extraordinary. He is extraordinary. He’s played five games out of six, and one of which he was left out as so not to risk him.”
