According to multiple reports in Italy, Salernitana are struggling to reach an agreement with any replacement for Davide Nicola, who could incredibly return to the club.

Nicola was sacked on Monday, the day after an 8-2 loss against Atalanta. Football Italia understands unity between the coach and President Danilo Iervolino was lost as the pair had different views over the team’s targets this season.

However, Il Corriere dello Sport, Sky Sport and La Gazzetta dello Sport report Nicola’s time at the club may not be over.

The Granata haven’t yet found a replacement for the 39-year-old. Rafa Benitez has snubbed an offer from the Stadio Arechi, while Leonardo Semplici and Roberto D’Aversa have not agreed to terms with the club.

Salernitana offer a six-month deal with an option to extend until 2024, depending on the points collected in the second part of the season and no candidate has yet agreed to such terms.

President Iervolino had a new round of talks with players on Tuesday and Nicola’s return is one of the options as confirmed by club sources quoted by Gazzetta.

In the meantime, Stefano Colantuono, a former Salernitana coach currently in charge of the club’s youth sector, oversees training sessions ahead of Saturday’s derby against Napoli.
