Davide Nicola has decided to stay on as Salernitana coach and sign a two-year contract, despite the sudden exit of Walter Sabatini.
The club managed an extraordinary comeback from the bottom of the Serie A table to secure safety in the final game of the season, largely due to the transformations brought in mid-term by Nicola and director of sport Sabatini.
There were concerns when Sabatini walked away this week that the coach would also follow him out the door, amid a row with President Danilo Iervolino over transfer strategy.
However, today a summit between the coach and patron was successful in allaying Nicola’s fears, so he is going ahead with the two-year contract they had already agreed.
Iervolino took over Salernitana from Lazio President Claudio Lotito on December 31, bringing in Sabatini to revamp the squad in the January transfer window, then coach Nicola on February 15.
The tactician put together 18 points in just 15 matches to go from rock bottom to safety.
This will be a fairly new experience for Nicola, as he became known as a coach who rescued sides in disastrous situations, not having to work in pre-season since Crotone in 2017-18.
