The Magpies have offered €2m for an initial loan for the remainder of the season, with an option to buy for a further €20m should the 23-year-old make an impression in the north-east of England.
German outlet Bild meanwhile state that RB Leipzig haven’t given up on signing the player, and are making another attempt of persuading Lazaro to return to the Bundesliga.
Lazaro is now surplus to requirements at San Siro following the signing of Ashley Young last week.
