Newcastle United fans welcomed Sandro Tonali at the club with a chant copied from those of Leeds United and Tottenham for Wilfried Gnonto and Antonio Conte.

The Italy international made his first appearance with the Magpies on Tuesday, contributing to Miguel Almiron’s opener in the first half.

His new fans welcomed him with a chant that had already been heard in the Premier League for the Italians Gnonto and Conte: “Sandro Tonali drinks Moretti, eats spaghetti and he hates f***ng Sunderland.”

It’s the same chant already used by Leeds and Tottenham fans in the past, but their versions ended differently. Spurs named rival club Chelsea as the target of abuse.

Tonali joined Newcastle from Milan this summer in a deal believed to be worth circa €80m, including add-ons.

The 23-year-old midfielder has become the most expensive Italian player in history and has signed a contract until 2028 at St. James’ Park.

  1. Of the 10 cities i’ve been to, italians drink moretti and eat spaghetti.
Are we expected to be offended by literally everything now?
Or would you prefer we make new songs about cannoli and barolo?
