Newcastle are making progress in their attempts to sign Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali after a face-to-face meeting between various representatives took place on Wednesday afternoon according to various reports in both England and Italy.

According to James Horncastle and David Ornstein of The Athletic, The Magpies lodged an official offer of €50m for the 23-year-old Rossoneri and Azzurri midfielder on Tuesday, but the offer has since risen to a fee closer to €70m after Wednesday’s talks.

Calciomercato also reports the same fee, although adds that Milan continue to push for a sum in the region of €80m.

According to the Italian outlet, Tonali will be offered a significant increase in his annual wage packet, which currently stands at around €3.5m per season, with Newcastle ready to pay an initial €6.5m per year, which could rise to around €7.5m with bonuses.

Calciomercato also writes that Tonali, who will captain Italy during the upcoming Under-21 European Championship, has expressed a willingness to accept Newcastle’s proposal.
