Milan continue to prepare the groundwork for a Jonathan David summer swoop, but face strong competition from Newcastle United for the LOSC striker.

It has been rumoured for many months that David is earmarked for the future of the Rossoneri attack, phasing out Olivier Giroud as he goes towards retirement.

The asking price was always a problem, but as his contract is due to expire in June 2025 and he seems to have no intention of discussing an extension with the Ligue 1 side, it could drop as low as €35-40m.

Born in New York and representing Canada at international level, David also fits the bill for Milan’s new owners RedBird in building up a more global profile, particularly in North America.

Tuttomercatoweb warn that the concern is if Newcastle revive their interest, then the Rossoneri simply cannot compete on a financial level with the Premier League outfit.

Arsenal had also been tracking David, but seem to have moved on to other targets in the meantime.

He scored seven goals with two assists in 22 competitive games so far this season for Lille.
