The Dutch international suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament against Napoli in March 2014, and returned to training in October.

However, after just six appearances in Serie A, it was revealed that Strootman was suffering from Cyclops Syndrome, resulting in another operation.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 25-year-old is still suffering from pain in his knee, and the Giallorossi have left the decision about how to move forward down to the player.

The newspaper believes that, while an exploratory surgery might take place, it’s also possible that Strootman will need further surgery on the ligament.

The midfielder has been assessed by experts in the United States and Germany, as well as team doctors for the Netherlands and Roma, though not all of them have recommended further surgery.

The Lupi will therefore leave the decision to Strootman, who will now decide whether to go under the knife again.
