Simon Kjaer is set to receive a contract extension with improved salary at Milan and could perhaps also become their new captain.

The defender arrived from Sevilla on loan in January 2020, making the move permanent for €3.5m.

His current contract only runs to June 2022, but the 32-year-old has quickly become a key figure in Stefano Pioli’s side.

According to multiple sources, Denmark international Kjaer has been offered a new and improved contract that will raise his salary.

La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests it will go from wages of €1.2m per season to €1.5m net.

Above all, Kjaer is the favourite to become the new Milan captain, replacing Alessio Romagnoli, who was pushed to the bench by January 2021 signing Fikayo Tomori.

Kjaer made 39 competitive appearances for Milan last season, also contributing one goal and two assists.

He then earned plaudits around the world for keeping a cool head during Denmark teammate Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest in the UEFA EURO 2020 match against Finland.
