As Mauro Zarate continues to earn confidence at Lazio’s pre-season training retreat, the club reportedly consider ways of keeping hold of him.

After a falling out this time last year, Zarate was sent away from the Aquile on a year-long loan to Inter for 2011-12. However, with that proving a disappointment, the Argentine returned this summer to the capital, albeit with the expectation that he would again be looking for a new club for next term.

The Gazzetta dello Sport suggest today, though, that the club are impressed enough with his efforts in pre-season training under new Coach Vladimir Petkovic to consider the best way forward to keep the striker.

Zarate’s wage is seen to be the main barrier to this possibility, as he currently sits on a €4m deal that expires in June 2014.

Claudio Lotito is understood to have made initial contact with Zarate’s agent, Luis Rizzi, over the possibility of renegotiating that contract in a bid to spread his earning over an extended period of time. A meeting between Lotito and Rizzi is speculated as on the horizon.
