The round of 16 kicks off on Saturday and these Netherlands vs. USA predictions suggest that it will be the European side that progresses further. But the US have already proved that they can be a very tough opponent.

Netherlands vs. USA odds

1 – Netherlands to win – 19/20

2 – Under 2.5 goals scored – 8/13

3 – Both teams not to score – 7/10

4 – Half time/ Full time Draw/Netherlands  – 7/2

5 – Cody Gakpo to score at any time – 10/3

Louis van Gaal has been criticised during this World Cup for the somewhat boring nature of his side’s victories. But the veteran coach can point to an unbeaten opening phase and a place in the last 16 as proof that they are doing something right. Now a clash with the US is their reward.

The Oranje may have profited from a relatively easy group but there have been some stand out performances. Many pundits had Memphis Depay down as the attacking threat in the squad, but it has been Cody Gakpo who has found the net in all three games and is one of the top scorers in the competition so far.

The PSV striker could well be the difference again against the US, in a game that is likely to be closely fought. Do not expect too many goals on Saturday though, as the World Cup moves into the business end of proceedings.

The US will fancy their chances after progressing from the only group with all four nations in the top 20 of FIFA’s rankings. There have been some solid displays from Gregg Berhalter’s men, who have proved that they can provide the steel – as well as the skill – when necessary.

The Netherlands might find it difficult to open up the American defence early on in this game and it could still be all square at the break, with the Dutch finding the breakthrough in the second half.

America’s lack of a goal-scoring striker may well make all the difference at the Khalifa International Stadium. But, four years ahead of hosting the World Cup again, this is a young team that will only improve before the next edition.

Netherlands vs. USA line-ups

Netherlands (3-4-1-2): Noppert; van Dijk, Aké, Timber; Blind, de Jong, de Roon, Dumfries; Klaassen; Gakpo, Depay

USA (4-3-3): Turner; Robinson, Ream, Carter-Vickers, Dest; Musah, Adams, McKinnie; Pulisic Wright, Weah

Netherlands team news

Louis van Gaal has largely stuck with the same starting eleven, although Ajax defender Jurrien Timber has been preferred for the last two games over Matthijs de Ligt and could play again here. Memphis Depay was also brought in for the final group game against Qatar and could get the nod ahead of Steven Bergwijn, with Cody Gakpo guaranteed a start.

USA team news

Gregg Berhalter has also kept faith with the same group of players throughout the group stage and will not be changing things around now. Cameron Carter-Vickers came in for Walker Zimmerman for the game against Iran and could retain his place, while Haji Wright may return up front after Josh Sargent failed to impress in that game. The big news is that Christian Pulisic should be fit to start, after going off injured against Iran.
