Alessandro Nesta believes transfer fees are too high in the modern game as “the quality seems lower to me”.

The former centre-back joined Milan from Lazio for €31m in 2002, but the likes of John Stones, David Luiz and Eliaquim Mangala have all moved for higher sums in recent years.

“It’s a general problem, not just an Italian one,” Nesta explained to Corriere della Sera.

“There are so many overvalued players, just look at the figures which are flying around in this transfer window.

Nesta won 78 caps for Italy, and was asked about the future when Giorgio Chiellini, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci hang up their boots.

“If they’re fit, I think Barzagli and Chiellini will still play at the World Cup, and Bonucci is not up for discussion.

“But [Daniele] Rugani, [Alessio] Romagnoli and also [Mattia] Caldara are growing up well: when the others stop we’ll be fine.”
